Dr. Rashid Faruqee now teaches at Virginia International University, USA. He joined the Institute of Microfinance (InM) as a visiting fellow on April 15, 2009. He received his Ph.D in Economics from University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) in 1975. Dr. Faruqee retired from the Word Bank as Lead Economist, Agricultural & Rural Development Department, South Asia Region. While working in the Bank, he published several books, many articles and papers on topics of agriculture, rural development, water resource management and structural development.
His major published books and papers include: Impact of Farm Credit in Pakistan, Agricultural Economics 28, (2003); Bangladesh Water Sector Review, ADB, 2003; Bangladesh Rural Development Strategy University Press, Dhaka 2000; Strategic Reforms for Agricultural Growth in Pakistan World Bank Institute Learning Resources Series, World Bank 1999; Bangladesh Agriculture in the 21st Century, University Press, Dhaka,1998; Water Resource Management in Bangladesh: Steps Towards a New National Water, World Bank, 1998; and Adjustment in Africa: Lessons from Case Studies, World Bank, 1989.
Prior to joining the Bank in 1975, he worked as a researcher and a tutor in Economics Department, University of Michigan. Prior to coming to USA for graduate studies, he was a member of civil service and held several senior government positions in planning and rural development in Bangladesh (then East Pakistan).
His most recent work experience (2003-08) includes serving as Senior Policy Adviser, Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, Government of Pakistan.
