Findings from Microcredit & Health Services Experiment in Rural Bangladesh
InM and Department of Population, Family and Reproductive Health, School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA jointly organised a seminar on ”Findings from Microcredit & Health Services Experiment in Rural Bangladesh” at BRAC Centre Auditorium, Dhaka on December 30, 2010. Mr. Abul Kalam Azad, Honorable Minister for Information and Cultural Affairs, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh graced the event as the Chief Guest. Professor Stan Becker and Dr. Ruhul Amin of the Johns Hopkins University, School of Public Health, USA and Ms. Simeen Mahmud, Lead Researcher, BRAC Development Institute, BRAC University were the keynote speakers at the seminar.
The seminar was chaired by Dr. Syed M. Ahsan, Visiting Fellow, InM. Dr. Abbas Bhuiya, SBSU Head and Deputy Executive Director, ICDDR,B and Dr. Atonu Rabbani, Visiting Fellow, InM were present as discussants. Three papers entitled “Microcredit and Use of Health Services Experiment in Rural Bangladesh”, “Rapid Growth of Microcredit and Mission Drift: New Evidence from Selected Rural Areas of Bangladesh”, and “Exploring the Relationship between Microcredit Membership and Gender Norms in Rural Bangladesh” were presented on the occasion.
The seminar was aimed at addressing and disseminating the findings from the diverse experiments regarding microcredit and health services in the rural areas of Bangladesh. The seminar became lively by the active participation of academicians, microfinance stakeholders, practitioners, policymakers and researchers from reputed institutions.
