Regional Dialogue with NGO / MFIs and Borrowers: Rajshahi Region
InM organised its 6th and the last regional dialogue in Rajshahi on August 16, 2014 with different NGOs and MFIs working in Rajshahi Division.
Different NGOs and MFIs of Rajshahi Sadar, Bogra, Sirajgonj, Natore, Pabna, Naogaon, Chapainobabgonj and their members were participated in the dialogue.The dialogue was graced by the presence of Dr. Riaz Islam, Team Leader, PROSPER, Programme Coordination Unit, DFID as the Chief Guest.Professor M. A. Baqui Khalily, Executive Director, InM presided the session. The special opening speech was given by Dr. Md. Mosleh Uddin Sadeque, Director (Training & Operations). The event was conducted by Mr. Md. Abdul Hye Mridha, Senior Deputy Director (Training & Admin), InM.
The regional dialogue was divided into two sessions. The first session involved discussions with the members/ borrowers of NGOs/ MFIs to study their present status which will be effective for expanding the activities of microfinance sector. A total of 150 representatives and 50 members/ borrowers from different NGO/ MFIs of Rajshahi Division were participated and out of them 27 representatives and 37 members/ borrowers were actively participated in the discussion. This dialogue helped InM to design new pathways to address the emerging issues in the areas of poverty reduction and development.
The second session of the dialogue was with the Executive Directors and Senior Officials of the NGOs/ MFIs of Rajshahi Division, practitioners and stakeholders. This session aimed to understand the needs, problems and operational challenges of microfinance faced by the NGOs/ MFIs and way outs to overcome those challenges.The discussions emphasised on the challenges in working with the grass root people of the Rajshahi Division. These will help InM to design its training, and research programmes to address their needs and aspirations.
The Chief Guest Dr. Riaz Islam, Team Leader, Prosper, Program Coordination Unit, DFID stated on reducing rate of interest for those borrowers who already have more than fifty percent savings. He also highlighted on the training of microfinance workers as well as the training for the borrowers.
Professor M. A. Baqui Khalily in his concluding remarks emphasised on education. According to him, education is the only way to break out the circle of poverty. He also mentioned that the NGOs-MFIs can work together can make a significant impact on education through proper coordination and cooperation. InM will continue its research work, training and advocacy for the development of microfinance sector.
